Acne is a skin condition that develops when pores become clogged or infected with bacteria. Each pore is connected to a sebaceous gland, which produces an oily substance called sebum.
Extra sebum can plug up pores, causing the growth of a bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes.
It is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, affecting an estimated 85% of people at some point in their lives.
Many factors contribute to the development of acne, including genetics, diet, stress, hormone changes and infections.
There are some ways that you can perform at home to treat acne.
1. Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that is extracted from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a small tree native to Australia.
Tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, which means that it might kill P. acnes, the bacteria that causes acne. Tea tree oil's anti-inflammatory properties mean that it can also reduce the swelling and redness of pimples.
2. Apply Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is popular as a cure-all for many applications.
Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apple cider, or the unfiltered juice from pressed apples. Apple cider vinegar contains several organic acids that have been shown to kill P. acnes.
Some people do like to use apple cider vinegar as a toner.
But it being an acid, must be used carefully.
3. Green tea
Green tea contains high concentrations of a group of polyphenol antioxidants called catechins.
Antioxidants help the body break down chemicals and waste products that can damage healthy cells. Green tea may help clear out some of the debris and waste that has built up in open acne sores.
The major antioxidant in green tea — epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) — has been shown to reduce sebum production, fight inflammation and inhibit the growth of P. acnes in individuals with acne-prone skin.
4. Avocado oil
Avocado oil is rich in linoleic acid, linolenic acid and oleic acid, minerals and vitamins A, C, D, and E.
It can be used topically to fight off free radicals and achieve radiant skin. It is an excellent source of enrichment for dry, damaged or chapped skin.
5. Aloe vera
Aloe vera is well known for its skin-soothing and skin-healing properties. Aloe vera is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, meaning it may reduce the appearance of acne and prevent acne breakouts.
When applied to the skin, aloe vera gel can help heal wounds, treat burns and fight inflammation. Aloe vera contains lots of water and is an excellent moisturizer, so it is especially suitable for people who get dry skin from other anti-acne products.
Honey has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes; its beneficial effect is presumed due to antibacterial activity.
It contains many antioxidants that can help to clear waste and debris from clogged pores.
Garlic contains organosulfur compounds, which have natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Organosulfur compounds can also help to boost the immune system, which helps the body fight infections.
8. Clean diet
Try and avoid sugar and dairy as bacteria feeds off of it and, depending on the patient's genetic makeup, it can make the acne worse. Eating high-GI foods causes a spike in insulin, which is thought to increase sebum production. Because of this, high-GI foods are believed to have a direct effect on the development and severity of acne.

10. Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is a natural, waxy substance extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub.
Some of the compounds in jojoba oil might help to reduce skin inflammation, which means it may reduce redness and swelling around pimples, whiteheads, and other inflamed lesions.
