3. Practice Yoga
Yoga along with other substance abuse treatment programs can help in overcoming drug addiction.
It usually involves breathing control while doing specific bodily postures.
Yoga uses physical postures to connect the body and mind. This technique also uses certain breathing exercises. Yoga helps an individual to gain self-awareness and focus attention inward.
4. Use Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese custom in which needles are inserted through specific parts of your skin designed to relax or stimulate your organs, your body, and your aura.
However, there is a study that shows, to a certain extent, how acupuncture can help with substance abuse.
Acupuncture is often used to reduce symptoms related to withdrawal. It stimulates detoxification, promotes a heightened sense of relaxation, and encourages endorphin production thereby making it an excellent tool for overcoming addiction.
Regular exercise in any form has been proven to boost confidence and resolve in recovering addicts. It is a healthy way to stay busy, get stronger, build your focus, de-stress, get better sleep, and help you feel much better about yourself.
It helps to increase the secretion of serotonin which is associated with feelings of well-being and happiness as well as endorphins, the chemical hormones in the brain that accounts for positive mood. It also helps improve sleep and relaxation which eases tension in our physical body and gives us a way to recover lost energy.
6. Benefit From Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy can be very helpful in giving up addictions. It uses essential oils and these oils used also have other healing properties.
You can add the essential oils to a warm bath. Ideally, 5–10 drops of the oil in a tub full of water or you can just use them like smelling salts during the day. Just open the bottle and inhale the aroma. Anise, basil, black pepper or a eucalyptus oil scent can be used.
Aromatherapy is important for overcoming the addiction because the scent that one receives drives out the hankering taste of alcohol or appetite for drugs especially those with a particular scent such as marijuana. The aroma replaces the substance scent that you thirst and desire.
7. Art and Music Therapy
Learning to or simply creating works of art and music is a great way to express yourself without causing any harm to yourself or anyone else.
It may be used to provide emotional release, self-expression, stress management, and adjustment to recovery. Art therapy helps decrease an addict’s denial of addiction, increase the addict’s motivation to change, provide a secure outlet for painful emotions, and reduce the shame of addiction.
Addictions can be hard to overcome. The first step is to accept there is a problem, and the second step is to do something about it.
The most important thing to remember is that addiction is not a personal choice or a sign of weak moral standing—addiction is a treatable disease.
