Maintaining kidney health is as important as taking care of other organs in the body. Optimum kidney health ensures that the body is able to filter waste properly and produce hormones that ensure its smooth functioning. Emphasizing this and the many other important roles played by the kidneys is World Kidney Day, which is observed on the second Thursday of March every year.

There are various diseases related to kidney and they can cause a lot of severe issues. One of the main kidney problems are kidney stones which can cause severe pain in the side and back. Some of the symptoms of kidney stones are nausea, vomiting, persistent need to urinate, fever and pain during urination.

As the world observes World Kidney Day, here’s a list of do’s and don’ts that you should keep in your mind to have a healthy kidney:

* To have a healthy kidney, a person is advised to eat citrus food like oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, lemon and pineapples.

* You are also advised to increase the level of calcium in your daily diet.

* You are also advised to increase the amount of vitamin D in your diet.

* To have a healthy kidney, you are advised to increase the amount of plant-based protein in your diet.

* Increasing animal-based protein in the diet is not recommendable

* You are also advised to decrease the amount of sodium in your diet because sodium can significantly increase the risk of developing kidney stones

* You are also advised to reduce high-urate foods such as meat and seafood

* Reducing the high oxalate foods from the diet like leafy greens, chocolate, cola and coffee is also advisable
